Happy Holidays Robinson Wrestling Family,
We are so excited about this season, and we couldn’t do it without the amazing support that you give. We are blessed to have you all in our world, and the success that we have had couldn’t have occurred without the hard work and dedication that you have put into our program.
The beginning of the year has had its ups and downs, but we are excited about the product that we are putting on the mat, and we know that February will bring great things! We are really impressed with the improvement of many of our new wrestlers. These young men will be making an impact much sooner than we thought!
We have wrestled in several competitions. We began the first weekend in December with a trip to Front Royal , Virginia to compete in the Skyline Elite opener. We brought several starters and several new wrestlers itching for competition. Although we finished 6th as a team, we had some fantastic individual performances. Jake Smith (119) and Jack Bass (125) were champions, Santiago Valdez defeated 2 state place winners to finish second (130), Lucas Sodergren (103) finished 4th, Zak Depasquale was 7th at 135, Jackson Maxey (152) was 7th, Kevin Vasquez (145) was 9th as were Greyson Olimpo (103), Zak Leitzau (171) and Josh Trowell (160). It wasn’t as well as we hoped, but it got some well need experience for several young wrestlers.
Two weekends ago, the meat grinder began. We took 4 wrestlers to the Walsh Ironman in OH. We didn’t come out with any place winners, but we did come away with a national name for ourselves. Jake and Dallas Smith were both a few points from placing in arguably the toughest tournament in the nation. Unfortunately they fell just a bit short. Shon Topper (130) and Brooks Martino (135) wrestled well against some of the best, but couldn’t come away with the victories.
During that weekend we send a bunch of wrestlers to the Ben and Jerry’s invitational in Spotsylvania, VA. Our young wrestlers shines as the Rams took their first team title of the Year.
Champions were:
103 Lucas Sodergren, 125 Santiago Valdez, 130 Zak Depasquale, 140 Jonathan Simmons, 160 Wes Jones
Runner-up was:
Tim Fitzpatrick (189)
3rd place:
Jake Pinkston (285)
4th Place:
Dylan Martin (112) and Jake Gross (145)
and 5th place went to:
Jackson Maxey (152) and Zak Leitzau (171)
Last weekend we sent half of our team The Beast of the East in Newark, DE. This is also arguably the toughest tournament in the country with over 110 teams represented and about 60 kids per weight class. We sent 8 wrestlers and we place 4 in the top 8. This is the first time we have ever place more than 2 in the 10 years we have gone. Only one other team in the tournament had more than 4 place winners!!! PRETTY AWESOME!
At 103, Lucas Sodergren didn’t place, but he was able to gain some confidence winning 3 matches.
At 119, Jake Smith got over the hump defeating several nationally ranked wrestlers and finishing 6th in the weight class.
At 125, jack Bass came in unseeded and defeated the #2 seeded wrestler in the 1st round. He continued on in his winning ways to the semi-finals falling just short of the final…he ended up finishing 6th…
At 130, Santiago Valdez also defeated a few seeded wrestlers, but fell just short of placing… He finished 3-2
At 135, Brooks Martino defeated the 3rd seed in the 3rd round, and got to the quarters… after losing in the quarters, he won an amazing triple –overtime ride out 6-5 to get to the placement round. He ended up placing 8th in the medals.
At 140, Jonathan Simmons also wrestled hard to finish 3-2 on the day.
At 160, Wes Jones got over the hump and place 8th in a TOUGH weight class. He won several close matches to finish 8th
At 171, Tim Fitzpatrick had a BRUTAL Draw. He got some deserved experience at the highest level, and we are excited for him this season!!!!
The rest of the team travelled to Charles County, MD to compete in the Lackey invitational. We took 10 wrestlers and finished 4th as a team in a field of 19 teams. Several young athletes gained some valuable experience.
At 103, Greyson Olimpo finished 3rd,
at 112, Dylan Martin finished 4th ,
at 130 Zak Depasquale continued his winning ways with the CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!
At 135, Shon Topper was IMPRESSIVE and he also finished on the top of the podium
At 140 Kevin Vasquez got a few victories, but finish out of the medals
At 145, Jake Grose finished 5th
At 152, Jackson Maxey was close, but lost in the consi-semis…
At 171, Zak Leitzau finished with a few victories, but just out of medal contention
At 189, John Buono wrestled well, but was out matched off the podium
At HWt, Jake Pinkston lost a 4-3 battle to finish as the Runner-up.
As you can see we have a lot of kids competing, and we are excited about the rest of the season. Hopefully, you can come see us this Wednesday 12/22 as we face Fairfax, Annandale and Brook Pointe. Matches will begin at 5. IT IS ALUMNI night, so afterwards we will go to Brion’s grille to tell old stories and make new friends.
