Conference Championships and impending Snow!

View this email in your browser

Good Afternoon Robinson Fans,
Thanks for all of your help throughout the years to make us as successful as we have been.  There is no way we could accomplish what we have without the tradition and expectations that you set in our path.  As always, we are indebted to you!

This past weekend our second season started with a bang!  As a team we are the VHSL Concode Conference 5 champions, and we won the tournament by a whopping 72 points.   Although we don't want to peak until the state tournament, our team came to compete, and they competed very well.

We put 11 out of 14 wrestlers into the finals, and we had 8 champions, 3 runner-ups and 2 third place winners.  We will be sending 13 athletes to the regional tournament this upcoming weekend.
Our Champions were Sam Book (106 lbs), Mason Rockman (126), Dane Robbins (138), Jack Bass (152), Zak DePasquale (160), Daniel Mika (170), Cole Depasquale (182) and Jake Pinkston (285).  All of our Champions looked great in the finals, especially Mason Rockman at 126 who reversed a 16-1 loss to the #1 ranked wresltler in the state with a 5-4 victory.  This victory secured him the Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament.  Our runner-ups were Brandon Greyson (113), Austin Riggs (132) and JP Vittori (220).  Taking 3rd were Avery Henry (145) and Max Sears (195).  You can see all of the results at: http://s201.trackwrestling.com/tw/predefinedtournaments/MainFrame.jsp?newSession=false&sport=wrestling&TIM=1392143570240&pageName=&ie=true&frameSize=500

Speaking of Avery Henry... This week in the Washington Post, a fantastic article and video was produced on our 145 lb wrestler.  Click http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/highschools/avery-henry-born-with-a-form-of-dwarfism-thrives-on-robinson-wrestling-team/2014/02/09/6486391c-8c2b-11e3-98ab-fe5228217bd1_story.html   to see the article!  Our sport is the best because anyone can compete and also rise above adversity!

This Friday, we are hoping to start our 6A North Regional tournament, with he top 4 athletes moving on to the states that will be held at HOME on February 21-22.  I say hoping, because there's a weather system coming our way.  I've said this before, but we are about the only students on the planet who dread snow days...especially this time of year.  As the forecasters prognosticate on snow totals, we are continuing our focus on the championships ahead.

As of right now, this weekend's schedule at Centreville High School look like this:

Friday – February 14
2:00 pm                First round
5:45 pm                First round consolation
7:30 p.m.              Quarter-final championship

12:30 pm         Championship Semi-finals and Consolation quarterfinals
2:30 p.m.         Consolation Semi-finals (2-2-2 format)
3:30 pm           Consolation Finals (2-2-2 format)
6:00 p.m.        Championship Matches

You will also be able to follow this event on Trackwrestling.com at: http://s101.trackwrestling.com/tw/predefinedtournaments/MainFrame.jsp?newSession=false&loadBalanced=true&sport=wrestling&TIM=1392145726536&pageName=&ie=true&frameSize=500

Let's hope by the Grace of God this storm misses us, but if it doesn't, I will keep you all aware of any changes.

Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you soon!  If you would like to sponsor the state tournament in any fashion, we are looking for help!   Attached is a document you can use if you wish to donate.  http://gallery.mailchimp.com/1ff3e1c3c176ab6be0efb4b56/files/Wrestling_Request_Letter_2014.docx

Wrestling Installment

Big weekend for the Rams

View this email in your browser

Good afternoon Ram fans!
Before I begin, I want to thank all of you for your work to make our program successful!  Last week, for the first time since I've been at Robinson, we were ranked in the national pre-season rankings, and I know much of that success can be attributed to the work that everyone has put in over the years of our storied program.

I hope everyone braved the winter weather this week.  Unfortunately, we missed a few days of school, but it was good to get our kids healthy for this weekend's tournaments.

Last weekend, the varsity traveled to Front Royal for the Elite Opener at Skyline HS with some very tough teams from all around Virginia and West Virginia!  It is a great first competition because all wrestlers are guaranteed 4-5 matches, and everyone had a few tough ones.  We won the tournament by about 30 points over Colonial Forge, and our boys have progressed a great amount since last year.  It is a non-traditional format, so some of the placements may seem low, but early in the season, it is more important that our kids get matches.  We had 6 in the final groups of 3 and we came out with 6 champs.  Austin Riggs at 126, Jack Bass at 152, Zak DePasquale, Daniel Mika at 170, Cole DePasquale at 182 and Jake Pinkston at 285 were all champions, and the tournament was highlighted by Cole Depo's victory over Dylan Wisman of Millbrook who had been ranked 17th in the nation and was a Fargo All-American.  Below are the teams placements and records for the weekend.  We had 2 wrestlers entered who were non-scores...that's what NS means.
106. - Sam Book - 7th - (3-2 record)
113 - Brandon Greyson 5th (3-2 record)
120 - Ben Levinson 12th
126- Austin Riggs 1st (5-0 record)
126 NS - Tyler Hazard 4th - (4-1 record)
132- Mason Rockman 4th (4-1 record)
138 - Dane Robbins - 4th (4-1 record)(lost in 2OT) to the champion in the pool
145 - Avery Henry 5th -(3-2 record)
152 - Jack Bass 1st (5-0 record)
160 - Zak DePasquale - 1st - (5-0 record)
170 - Daniel Mika 1st (5-0 record)
182 - Cole DePasquale 1st (5-0 record)
195 - Max Sears 7th (3-2 record)
220 - JP Vittori 7th (3-2 record)
285 - Jake Pinkston 1st (5-0 record)
285 - Brendan Casey - 10th - (2-3 record)

Last night, Our JV competed at South County High School, and we were again successful at every level. It is great to see the constant improvement of our athletyes, and our coaching staff does agreat job of building up all of our athletes!

This weekend, we have 2 varsity events competing.  As I type (I'm not driving) we are taking a group of kids to arguably the toughest tournament in the nation.  It is called the Walsh Ironman in Cuyahoga Falls, OH.  Our team is prepared, and we're coming in seeded as high as we ever have been.  Seven of our athletes are seeded in the top 15 (the most we've ever had seeded is 3), and we know our kids will come prepared to better all of their seeds.  You can follow the action on twitter (@robinsonwrstl) or on www.trackwrestling.com at:
http://www.trackwrestling2.com/tw/predefinedtournaments/MainFrame.jsp?newSession=false&sport=wrestling&TIM=1386866292555&pageName=&ie=false&frameSize=644

We have a second team of athletes traveling to JEB Stuart HS on Saturday to compete in the Raider Holiday Tournament.  First round is at 9, semis are at noon and finals will start at 4pm.  You can follow all of the action on twitter or on trackwrestling.com at:

There are a lot of great things happening in our program, and I haven't mentioned a few great things that happened pre-season.  Jack Bass finished 4th at the national tournament super 32 which along with his many other national accolades set into motion his college choice.  He signed with the #2 team in the nation, the Minnesota Golden Gophers... And also in college news, Avery Henry committed to Ferrum College in SW Virginia.  I know their pedigrees will pay off when they move on to bigger and better things.  (See photos below)... I hope to have more college commitments very soon!

Thanks again for all that you do!  I hope to see you all very soon!  Happy holidays!

Bryan Hazard
